Biocarbon Technologies
Pyrolysis of palm, bamboo and agricultural residues to produce biochar, carbon credits and green energy for reducing fertiliser dependencies and meeting day-to-day energy requirements.
Description
Based in East Malaysia, Biocarbon Technologies is a palm plantation company that runs a green technology hub. This hub includes a biogas plant that produces biogas for electricity generation and biomethane for use as fuel in its trucks. Every year, the plantations generate several tonnes of waste biomass in the form of palm, bamboo and other agricultural residues. These are typically left to decompose on the plantation site, often taking up to 5 years to fully compost. The company realised that pyrolysis of this waste biomass will be an excellent way to complement its green technology hub.
Solution
Using 2 C1000 pyrolysis units, the company will pyrolyse waste biomass from the plantations to produce sap (a substance used to enhance biogas production), biochar, carbon credits and heat. The heat from the biochar plant will be used to reduce biomass demands in an existing biomass boiler, effectively powering a steam generator that will supply the local area with green electricity. The heat will also be used to install a new torrefaction plant to produce black pellets for the steels industry’s green transition. The biochar will be used on the plantation to reduce fertiliser requirements as well as being sold in the local area.
