Onnu was founded in 2022 with the clear goal of commercializing the biomass pyrolysis industry. We could see that the technology and climate impacts were proven, but the sector was dominated by smaller-scale research and grant supported projects which were not profitable or scaling.
Our early focus was on project development, and we gradually grew a team of experienced engineers and sustainability consultants to advise clients on their pyrolysis projects, helping to bring plants online.
What we encountered as project developers were manufacturers with long (often 18+ month) lead times and machines with a 7+ year payback. We had a long list of potential clients wanting to put their underutlized biomass to use in a way that was good for the planet and their net-zero ambitions, but the slow manufacturing process and long payback time meant that a pyrolysis plant wasn’t a viable solution.
It was through these frustrations that we decided to pivot and switch our focus to building our own pyrolysis technology and engineering capabilities. After much R&D, many design iterations and a relentless push for innovation, CarboFlow was born. When designing CarboFlow, we had three main aims; build a pyrolysis machine that was affordable, versatile, and had a capacity that ultimately made it a viable option for those looking to put their biomass to use.

Onnu’s evolution from project developers to technology providers gives us a unique advantage. We understand exactly what it takes to bring a pyrolysis project online - from early concept and planning applications to feedstock trials and the consistent production of biochar, green energy, and carbon credits.
Our experience has directly shaped the innovations in our machine. CarboFlow’s unique feedstock drive prevents blockages, delivering higher yields and more consistent biochar. Our syngas-injection method minimizes energy loss in the pyrolysis chamber, reducing operational costs. And CarboFlow’s AI-enabled cameras and sensors provide users with the data and insights they need for optimal performance, enabling full automation.
We’re proud of where we’ve come from. Our project development beginnings have provided us with the knowledge and skillset needed to be fully invested technology providers. We believe that, with our new CarboFlow technology, we can fully unlock the potential of pyrolysis and make it a commercially viable option for even more projects.
