Setting up biochar manufacturing units to pyrolyse sustainably sourced wood residues, creating biochar products that enhance soil quality and boost crop yields.
Description
Located in Brockham, Surrey, a biomass processing company identified an opportunity in biochar production. Traditionally, wood residues from local tree surgeons and woodlands were processed into woodchips and other fuel products. However, the company recognized that pyrolyzing these residues to produce biochar offers greater value, benefiting both the environment and their business.
The company launched its biochar manufacturing operations by installing two C1000 pyrolysis units on-site. The resulting biochar and biochar-enriched compost products are applied on their own farms and sold to local farms and businesses to enhance soil quality and crop yield. Additionally, the biochar supports water filtration applications, while excess green energy from the process is used for log drying. By sequestering carbon, reducing chemical fertilizer reliance, and cutting greenhouse gas emissions from woodchip fuel, the company’s biochar manufacturing has made a significant positive impact on the climate.
